Børge Mogensen created the original 2213 for his own home in Gentofte Denmark in 1962. This premium quality reproduction of the 2213 Sofa features solid ash legs and hardwood frame graciously lined with polyurethane foam. The upholstery consists of a well-tailored cotton blend twill. All seams and piping are hand-stitched. The design goes a bit further than the classic mid-century modern cube shape. The body has an airy feel about it as it suspends over 4 architecturally square solid ash legs. Its comfortably proportioned size and lofty, fitted cushions line the seat, back and sides. Collectors of modernism pieces seek out the 2213 series for not only exceptional midcentury modern design, it is a practical seating experience for everyday use. * Style: 3 Seat Sofa. Cashmere Wool is the finest grade of wools. Cashmere sheep produce a double fleece that consists of a fine, soft undercoat. It is comfortable as it breathes naturally and features inherently stain resistant qualities. If you are not getting Cashmere Wool, you are not getting the best. About Cashmere Cashmere wool fiber is obtained from “Cashmere goats.” Historically, fine-haired Cashmere goats have been called Capra hircus laniger, as if they were a subspecies of the domestic goat Capra Hircus. Cashmere goats produce a double fleece that consists of a fine, soft undercoat or under-down of hair mingled with a straighter and much coarser outer coating of hair called Guard Hair. For the fine under-down to be sold and processed further, it must be de-haired. De-hairing is a mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine hair. After this separating process the resulting premium “cashmere” is ready to be dyed and converted into yarn. About the Design: A common issue with mid century modern seating designs is lack of practical comfort. Often the cube shape and straight lines result in a stiff, harshly vertical seating experience. Some would point the Le Corbusier LC2 and LC3 sofa series as prime examples of a well-designed modernist cube style with uncomfortable, impractical everyday use. The true genius of the 2213 (221 being the series and 3 indicating the numbers of cushion seats) is not only in the design but in its comfort. Mogensen created the series in 1962 for everyday use in his own home in Gentofte Denmark, about 20 minutes north of Copenhagen. The original still sits in the home today, between 2 end tables that were specifically created to fit on either end of the 2213. One of the differences you will find in the design of the 2213 from that of a typical mid century cube shape is the arms are slightly lower than the height of the back. As the arms near the back, they gently curve upward to meet the back height. The side frame that creates the arms is decisively narrow in form. Additional shape mirroring side cushions line the inside of the arm frame. Individual, lofty but fitted and tailored cushions for the seat and back of the sofa providing seating comfort. The frame and cushions have enough curve to them that a decidedly square leg design was selected extending from the far ends of the 4 corners of the frame down to the floor. An elevated airy feel and great distance of expanse between the supporting legs is the result. About the Original Designer: Borge Mogensen is well known as one of the most accomplished in a generation of furniture designs. This is no small matter when you consider his colleagues we names like Arne Jacobsen and Hans Wegner. Together the 3 designers brought international respect and notoriety to minimalist, modern Danish Furniture design. He was born in in Aalborg Denmark 1914. He lived through 2 world wars and during the focal years of what is now know as being the most creative period of modernism, the mid century era. He started as a cabinet designer in 1934. This profession certainly must have provided at least some of the funding for his 1936-1938 enrollment studying furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and crafts. Among his recognized awards were the Eckersberg Medaillen in 1950 and Honorary Royal Designer for industry in 1972. He was well versed on how to create modern appealing designs. Added to this ability was a certain calculation. You see, his approach to design was uniquely mathematical. He would actually measure and make notations of how people used their living spaces in ordinary life. He would use this information to create furniture that fit into their lives. Mogensen loved the idea of making great design affordable. A concept that is highly ironic when viewing a $19,000 price tag for a reproduction of his 2213 sofa series for sale online. He did go on to become the head of furniture design for the Danish Cooperative Wholesale Society. He created many designs while at the Danish Cooperative. Note-able was that the designs were of furniture that could be produced in cost efficient methods for accessibility to the masses.
